Lava River Cave is a bit north of Flagstaff. Getting there is not too bad, especially since we got to drive on muddy dirt roads.
As you can see from the shot of me climbing out, it's full of rubble.
< We were slipping and tripping our way toward the end when our common sense kicked in - the one that said "this is no place to brake an ankle so turn back now".
As we were leaving we discovered the woods abounded with mushrooms, many we had never seen before.
So naturally we took a plethora of pictures, but I've only included a few samples.
One of the signs sending us down another dirt road to the cave. As you can see it's a pretty area
Area around the entrance
This is the actual entrance. It really isn't all that small, just goes straight down a bunch of rocks.
This sign describes the cave, how long it is, etc.
Looking back out the entrance. You can see all the debris we climbed down
This shot gives you some idea of the size and shape of parts of the passage. Naturally there were areas of lower ceilings as well
A lower ceiling here, but the floor is the most interesting thing.
That's me climbing out. As usual, I'm dirty. It seems I'm always getting dirty.
The woods around the cave entrance were just loaded with mushrooms - like this heart shaped golden one
Another variation we saw
A beautiful silver sphere mushroom
Looks like some alien formation doesn't it?
Yes, the artsy mushroom shot
The area is recoving from a fire, but you can see how lush it already is
